January 26 was the ninth full snow day of the 2009-2010 school year for Southeast Webster-Grand, not counting late-starts and early-outs, when the school day is shortened due to weather issues. This large number of snow days is not only causing parents the added stress of dealing with emergency child care and other issues, but is also adding a full week to the scheduled last day of class. As of the latest school closing, two scheduled days of school vacation have been revoked and 7 days have been added on to the end of the school year.
“We are still getting out before Memorial Day,” said Superintendent Dr. Mike Jorgensen. “Of course, it is still only January.”
Schools have several options for making up the missed days, including adding 30 minutes to the school day, holding school on in-service days, on Saturdays or during spring break. Schools can also ask the governor to waive their 180 day requirement if the weather continues to pile on the snow and force more days off.
Not only are administrators working to reschedule missed days of instruction, but also athletic and other school events must be moved to other dates or venues on an increasingly crowded school calendar. One example would be the district large group speech contest that was scheduled for Saturday, January 23 at Rockwell City. Not only was the contest moved back 90 minutes to ensure that the roads were safer for traveling, but the contest itself was moved at the last minute to Manson High School due to weather-related problems at the Rockwell City school.
Tuesday night’s home basketball game and the wrestling meet at State Center are both in the process of being reschedule. Administration is currently looking at adjusting the date that ends the third quarter and perhaps moving ITBS tests as well.
According to Jorgensen, “Prior to last year, I had never cancelled more than 3 days in a year. Last year we had 5. Now we are up to 9 and still counting.”
